The oldest standing structure in Benzie County, built in 1858. It marks the entrance to the Manitou Passage on Michigan’s northwest coast. This was once a vital shipping channel.

Fresnel lenses have been replaced by more efficient less costly plastic lenses using small bulbs.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore encompasses a 35 mile stretch of Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline.

The dune height where we are standing is over 500′ and many people (see the size of the people at the bottom of the dune in the last photo) walk/slide to the lake and then spend 1-2 hours hiking back up
