Today we relocated “Base-Camp One” from Naperville, Illinois to Elkhart, Indiana.
We packed up our small family, which includes 2 cats and a dog, and headed over to a local U-Haul dealer. There we rented a small enclosed trailer large enough to hold all of the stuff we’ve been staging near O’Hare International.
With little fanfare, we embarked on the second leg of our great adventure.
It was a beautiful Spring day as we navigated our way across Illinois and into Indiana, passing effortlessly through a number of tollways without so much as slowing down thanks to our new electronic EZ-Pass. How would anyone drive in this area without one? I know a lot of people complain about paying tolls, but we quickly decided it was worth it since the roads were really nice and smooth.
We stopped for a break just West of the Indiana boarder at the Chicago Southland Lincoln Oasis. These well designed rest areas are available throughout the region and feature ample truck and trailer parking and a few restaurants. Note to self: Remember these rest stops in the future when we are significantly longer in our new motorhome.
Not long after passing by South Bend, Indiana, the home of Notre Dame University and the Fighting Irish, we arrived in Elkhart. We dropped the trailer at a secure storage lot and moved into a nearby hotel where we’ll be staying until we make our way to Nappanee, Indiana and the Newmar factory where we will take delivery of our new motorhome on June 6!
